No. 15 UConn women’s basketball closed out 2023 with a dominant 95-64 win over the No. 18 Marquette Golden Eagles. The Huskies trailed by 10 just over two minutes in but turned it around en route to a blowout victory.

Paige Bueckers was spectacular with 25 points, five assists and three steals while Aaliyah Edwards recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Nika Mühl set a career-high with 10 boards to go with seven assists and five points. UConn owned the offensive glass 16-11 and out-scored the visitors 27-6 on second chance points. Aubrey Griffin helped in that department with five offensive rebounds (and nine total) as part of a nine-point day.

The freshmen all had good afternoons: KK Arnold led the youngsters with 13 points and also added three steals, Ashlynn Shade chipped in 12 points while Ice Brady and Qadence Samuels each had five points.

The Huskies had a 52-28 edge in the paint and only turned the ball over a season-low seven times.

UConn found itself in a 10-0 hole just over two minutes in because of an offense that couldn’t do anything and a defense that couldn’t get a stop. The Huskies started to settle in and traded baskets with the visitors before it took over at the midway point of the period. First, UConn scored six straight points to seize some momentum then it closed the first quarter on a 13-0 run — capped by a 3-pointer from Bueckers just before the buzzer.

The Huskies continued to roll in the second quarter, opening the period on a 9-2 spurt. Marquette didn’t put up much of a fight the rest of the way. UConn led by 17 at the half, 33 after three and 31 at the final buzzer.

Next, the Huskies will hit the road to visit Creighton on Wednesday. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. ET on SNY.
