UConn women’s basketball came in front-and-center in the Big East’s preseason awards, which were unveiled at the league’s media day on Tuesday. The Huskies were unanimously picked to finish first in the coaches’ poll while Creighton picked up Geno Auriemma’s vote since he can’t choose his own team.
Despite missing most of the last two seasons due to injury, Paige Bueckers is the 2023-24 Big East Preseason Player of the Year. She previous won the conference player of the year (and freshman of the year) during the 2020-21 campaign. Meanwhile, KK Arnold is the Big East Preseason Freshman of the Year while Aaliyah Edwards, Azzi Fudd and Nika Mühl made the preseason all-league team.
While the preseason freshman of the year almost always goes to the top-rated freshman, Arnold is deserving of the honor. The No. 6 player in the Class of 2023, she starred during UConn’s European Tour with her speed and quickness, which helped her get to the rim and disrupt defensively.
Meanwhile, Edwards, Fudd and Mühl will form the Huskies’ core alongside Bueckers this season. Mühl repeated as Big East Defensive Player of the Year in 2022-23 and made the all-league second team while Edwards earned the conference’s most improved player honor and was an unanimous All-Big East First Team selection.
Fudd made the 2022 All-Big East Freshman Team but dealt with injuries last season and sat out all but two games between Dec. 4 and the postseason.
