UConn in the Olympics: USA 3x3 survives test from Russia to stay undefeated

Cecile Pieper and Germany also opened up with a win over Great Britain.

Stef Dolson and USA 3x3 are off to a 4-0 start in the Olympics with wins over Romania and Russia on Sunday.

The US earned a comfortable 22-11 victory against Romania in the first game of the day with Stef Dolson scoring six points on 6/6 shooting with two rebounds. Kelsey Plum caught fire early and outscored Romania with 12 points.

Russia gave the US its first real test of the Olympics with the red, white and blue escaping with a 20-16 comeback win. Russia jumped out to a 4-1 lead before the US responded to tie it at 5-5. The two teams went back and forth for a few minutes before Russia pulled ahead 14-11. But from there, the US scored nine of the next 11 points to secure the victory.

Dolson contributed five points on 3-4 shooting (2-2 from the line) and two rebounds. Over the two games on Sunday, she finished with 11 points on 9-10 shooting with 4 rebounds.

Pieper gets the start for Germany

Germany field hockey opened the Olympics with a 2-1 win over Great Britain. Cecile Pieper earned a start at forward but didn’t record any shots on goal. Great Britain got on the board with a goal in the first quarter but Germany tied things in the second and took the lead for good in the third.

Looking ahead

Róisín Upton and Ireland field hockey return to action on Sunday night against the Netherlands at 9 p.m. EST.

On Monday, Aaliyah Edwards, Kia Nurse and Canada begin their quest for their first Olympic medal at 4:20 a.m. EST against Serbia while USA 3x3 continues group play against Italy and China at 4:55 a.m. EST and 8 a.m. EST, respectively.

Pieper and Germany will meet India at 8:15 a.m. EST as well.
