The two programs have never met on the football field, separated geographically and by the fact that UAB, like UConn, converted to the FBS level around the turn of the century.
The Blazers are a strong addition to the Huskies’ schedule, playing in bowl games twice in the past three years. The 2024 meeting won’t be the first time UConn played in Birmingham, as the Huskies traveled there for the 2007 PapaJohns.com Bowl, where they defeated South Carolina.
The Huskies now have scheduled eight games in 2024 and 10 in 2025.
UConn’s football independence journey began in in 2020 after the school returned to the Big East in all other sports. The 2021 season will be the Huskies’ first without a conference after the school canceled the 2020 season due to COVID-19 concerns. The season opener is slated for Aug. 28 at Fresno State.
