Memory Lane
Revisit special moments in UConn sports history
After this week’s game, UConn women’s basketball has now played Tennessee 24 times, with the Huskies holding a 15-9 series lead. The win is UConn’s second in a row over the Volunteers, but Tennessee had won the last three before that as they closed out the prior chapter of the rivalry in emphatic fashion.
Over the years, there have been plenty of legendary players on both sides of the ball and the prolific programs have a combined 19 national championships between them (UConn 11, Tennessee 8). And while the players and teams have certainly provided no shortage of entertainment, this rivalry would be nothing without coaches Geno Auriemma and Pat Summitt being at the forefront of it all.
Here’s the inside scoop on their epically tumultuous time as opposing coaches and some of the top moments in women’s college basketball’s greatest rivalry:
- Geno and Pat were worthy adversaries and UConn’s head coach always looked forward to battling against the best when they tangled with Tennessee:
- No matter when or where, UConn v. Tennessee remains must-see TV
- Rekindling once-fierce rivalry important for future of women’s game
- Epic all-time series includes dominant stretches by both Huskies and Volunteers
