Multiple UConn Basketball Legends Up For ESPYS

A handful of former Huskies hoop stars are looking to take home some hardware.

The ESPY’s are still over three weeks away, but the nominees list should have UConn fans marking their calendars for Wednesday, July 10.

Breanna Stewart, currently of the Seattle Storm and always of Husky lore, is up for Best Female Athlete, taking on the likes of Simone Biles, Alex Morgan, and Mikaela Shiffrin.

Stewie is back for more with the additional nomination of Best WNBA player. She’s joined on the list by fellow UConn legend Diana Taurasi at the ripe age of 37, who will probably be nominated for an Oscar next year.

Unfortunately, the heartbreaking 76-81 Final Four loss this year to Notre Dame is up for Best Game, probably because of its 26 lead changes and definitely not because everyone loves to see a dynasty fall. UConn fans probably prefer this award stay as far away from them as possible.

Last but not least — and to the surprise of virtually no one in the state of Connecticut — Jim Calhoun’s work over at St. Joseph’s has earned him the honor of Best Coach. There’s no nomination here because Coach already won it and he will be presented with the award that night. Hopefully he’s allowed to give a speech, and hopefully it’s expletive-free.
