UConn Announces Big Changes to Student Ticketing

UConn students will no longer have to pay for regular season home games

It’s been a long week, how about some good news? Well first, it appears Geno Auriemma has reloaded. But also, UConn’s athletic department announced earlier today that students will no longer need to purchase a ticket in order to attend any UConn regular season home game.

Now, students only need their Student ID for ticketed events, gaining entry on a first-come, first-serve basis. This includes football, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball and men’s hockey.

Director of Athletics and Friend of the Blog Dave Benedict had this to say about the change:

“Our students help create an exciting atmosphere at many of our home events and I am hopeful that this new streamlined process will entice even more students to join the fun. Students already contribute to our success through student fees and I feel it is important to eliminate any cost to them above and beyond those fees.”

This is obviously great news for UConn students. At least for mens basketball, it’s no secret there was a correlation between fan interest and the program’s recent decline. And across the board, the more populated any UConn sporting event is, the more it can lay claim to its status as a blue-blood sports program, regardless of conference affiliation. At least, that’s the athletic department’s goal.
