On Monday, UConn football announced three captains for the 2019 season, moving away from the leadership council.

Redshirt senior offensive tackle Matt Peart, redshirt senior linebacker Eli Thomas and redshirt sophomore punter Luke Magliozzi received the honor, announced in a tweet by head coach Randy Edsall.

Peart has been an anchor on the offensive line the last three seasons, starting all 36 games the Huskies have played since his redshirt freshman year. Last season, he helped pave the way for two 1,000 yard rushers in David Pindell and Kevin Mensah, who were the first duo to reach the mark since 2009.

Magliozzi was one of the most prolific punters in UConn history last season, averaging 42.9 yards per punt. That mark went for 36th in the country, fourth among freshmen. Twelve of his 63 punts went more than 50 yards and 19 fell inside the 20-yard line.

Thomas has not played much for the Huskies. He spent two years at Lackawanna College before coming to UConn and and spending the 2017 season rehabbing an ACL tear. On Oct. 10, Thomas suffered a stroke and missed the rest of the season. He registered 11 total tackles last year.

UConn opens up its season on Aug. 29 at home against Wagner.
