UConn women’s basketball is gunning for another national championship — sort of. On May 3-4, Olivia Nelson-Ododa, Megan Walker, Christyn Williams and USF’s Sydni Harvey will play for Team Connecticut in USA Basketball’s 3-on-3 National Championship in Las Vegas.
The three UConn players aren’t the only participants with ties to the Huskies. Former forward Andra Espinoza-Hunter will play for Mississippi State while former commit Charli Collier is on Texas’ roster.
The event is used as trials for US 3x3 National Team, who will compete at the 2019 Pan-Am Games. Last year, UConn didn’t have its own squad but Napheesa Collier competed in the tournament with team N.A.A.K. Oregon’s crew of Sabrina Ionescu, Ruthy Hebard, Erin Boley and Otiona Gildon took home the championship.
3x3 basketball will be added to the 2020 Summer Olympics in Toyko so events like this help USA Basketball introduce its players to the game. Unlike regular 5-on-5 basketball, 3x3 is played on a half-court with a 12-second shot clock. The team that leads after 10 minutes or reaches 21 points (whichever comes first) is declared the winner.
The preliminary games go from 6 p.m. (All times EST) on Friday to 1:30 a.m. on Saturday morning before resuming at noon until 3:30 p.m. that same day. Next, the teams will be seeded and the knockout round will begin at 6 p.m. on Saturday. If the Huskies reach the championship game, it will be streamed live at usab.com/live at 1 a.m. on Sunday morning.
