Former UConn women’s basketball star Maya Moore is stepping away from the sport in 2019, a decision she announced in the Players’ Tribune.
“My focus in 2019 will not be on professional basketball, but will instead be on the people in my family, as well as on investing my time in some ministry dreams that have been stirring in my heart for many years,” she wrote.
It appears there is not rift between Moore and the Minnesota Lynx. According to the Star Tribune, the relationship “remains strong” and Moore just needed to take some time off. She is expected to sign a multi-year extension with the team in the near future.
This past year was Moore’s eighth season in the WNBA after being the No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 draft by the Lynx. She has been to six All-Star games, won MVP in 2014 and helped the Lynx to the WNBA title in 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2017.
