For the second time in the last four months, a former UConn star helped defeat a Los Angeles team to earn a championship. On Sunday, Obi Melifonwu and the New England Patriots defeated the LA Rams 13-3 to capture Super Bowl LIII.

Melifonwu signed with the Patriots in early November after getting released by the Oakland Raiders. He played in just three games, including the AFC Championship game, playing 48 snaps, mostly on special teams.

Melifonwu is the ninth former Husky to win a major US championship and the fourth to win a Super Bowl, joining Nick Giaquinto, Will Beatty and Tyler Lorenzen. Other UConn alum to win include World Series champions Matt Barnes and George Springer along with NBA Finals champions Rip Hamilton, Ray Allen, Caron Butler, Travis Knight and Scott Burrell.
