Yesterday, USA Basketball announced the final roster for the upcoming FIBA women’s basketball World Cup, with five former UConn stars making the cut. Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi, Breanna Stewart, Tina Charles and Morgan Tuck will all represent the United States.

This is Bird’s fifth selection to a World Cup roster, which is the most in USA Basketball history. Taurasi will be playing in her fourth, and Charles will be making her third appearance. Stewart and Tuck will be making their first World Cup appearances.

Current UConn star Napheesa Collier was the only college player selected to travel to France with the 15-player roster for exhibition games, but she did not make the final cut. However, her performance in exhibition games gave an exciting preview of what is to come in the upcoming season. In Team USA’s exhibition game against Senegal, Collier had 7 points, 8 rebounds, 9 assists and 3 steals in just 23 minutes on the floor.

The FIBA World Cup tips off this Saturday, September 22 with the group stage. Team USA will play Senegal Saturday afternoon to begin their quest to take home a third-straight World Cup gold medal. The United States has taken home gold in four of the last five World Cups.
