As we’ve come to expect over the years, there’s always a strong UConn women’s basketball contingent among the group competing for a roster spot on the USA Basketball Women’s National Team.
Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi, Tina Charles, Breanna Stewart, Morgan Tuck and Napheesa Collier are the former and current members of the Huskies to be named part of the 16 finalists for the 12-man roster. Presently, Bird and Stewart are playing in the WNBA Finals and will join the team before the tournament starts on September 22 in Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain.
Before heading to the Canary Islands, Team USA will play in a four-team, international tournament in Antibes, France, Sept. 15-17, against Canada, France and Senegal. Taurasi is expected to join the team before they head to France.
Collier has made her presence known during camp and in the exhibition games and was a big part of the USA’s comeback win over Canada this past Saturday in Bridgeport, CT. In that game, she had five points, seven rebounds and three assists while playing the entire fourth quarter. On Monday night, she had seven points and four rebounds in the win over Japan.
In Saturday’s game, Charles had six points and five rebounds while against Japan she had 12 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Tuck contributed nine points and five rebounds against Canada while she had six points and two rebounds Monday night.
