After withdrawing from Putnam Science Academy, Akok Akok will join the UConn men’s basketball team for the second semester, but will redshirt and begin playing for the Huskies next fall as a de-facto class of 2019 commitment, according to 247 Sports’ Evan Daniels.

Originally, Akok was a member of the 2019 recruiting class while he played his post graduate year at PSA. However, in recent weeks he seemed to have a change of heart and reports came out that he may go straight to the NBA Draft. Not long after, he left PSA to go to college.

Akok chose the Huskies over Georgetown, Pittsburgh, Providence and Syracuse. He made his official visit to Storrs during the weekend of First Night and was able to see a quality crowd at Gampel Pavilion. He also came to the season opener against Morehead State and sat behind the Huskies bench for the Cornell game.

The 6-foot-10 star will bring energy on the glass and versatility on both ends. His size and quickness should make him a solid defender at multiple positions, and he has shown the ability to stretch the floor and hit jumpers, adding another dimension to the Huskies’ offense.

He joins guards Jalen Gaffney and James Bouknight in UConn’s 2019 recruiting class.
