The start of the 2018-19 women’s college basketball season is getting closer, which means the individual award watch lists are being announced. Despite losing three key players, UConn is still expected to be one of the best teams in the country and will be present on plenty of these lists.
Before the season, 20 players are selected to each watch list. Then in mid-February, that group is cut to just 10 players. In March, five finalists are chosen and the winner is announced in April during the Final Four in Tampa.
Here’s where the Huskies have landed on the respective watch lists:
- Crystal Dangerfield was named to the Nancy Lieberman Watch List, given each year to the best point guard in the country. Four different UConn floor generals have won this award a total of seven times: Sue Bird (2000, 2001), Diana Taurasi (2003, 2004), Renee Montgomery (2009) and Moriah Jefferson (2015, 2016).
- Katie Lou Samuelson made the 20-player list for the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award, presented to the nation’s best shooting guard. This is just the second year the award has existed. Samuelson was a finalist for it last season but it ultimately went to Victoria Vivians of Mississippi State.
- Napheesa Collier earned a spot on the Katrina McClain Award watch list, give to the best power forward in the nation. It is just the second year of the award, however, Collier was a finalist last season but lost to Oregon’s Ruthy Hebard.
