You never want to see a teammate go down with an injury. But you have to be ready if that teammate is the guy ahead of you on the depth chart.
That was the case for UConn Huskies wide receiver Mason Donaldson when Hergy Mayala went down early against the East Carolina Pirates on Sunday. with what head coach Randy Edsall said is most likely a “high ankle sprain”.
Mayala was UConn’s leading receiver in the two games before he went down with the injury. But with the all hard work Donaldson has put in, he was going to split time with Mayala during Sunday’s game.
While the Huskies didn’t come out on top against ECU, another youngster has emerged. Now if Mayala is out for any length of time, Donaldson will need to build off his six-catch, two touchdown performance and keep his and the team’s offensive momentum going forward.
Watch below as Edsall describes how Donaldson earned his spot on the field plus hear from Donaldson himself and quarterback Bryant Shirreffs.
