UConn Baseball had a good weekend after taking two of three against East Carolina, including a home game at Dunkin’ Donuts Park in Hartford.
Sophomore left-hander Tim Cate dazzled on Thursday in the capital city and earned the American Athletic Conference pitcher of the week honor for the final week of the regular season.
Cate threw the first complete game of his career and shut out the Pirates. He struck out just eight East Carolina batters, which is one of his lower totals on the year, while allowing five hits and four walks.
While the elite strikeout numbers were not there, no one got solid contact on Cate all night.
Cate previously earned pitcher of the week on April 3 and is now the third pitcher in the conference to win the award twice, after Houston’s Trey Cumbie and Seth Romero.
UConn’s two other starters have also received the award. Wills Montgomerie won on Feb. 27 and Mason Feole followed on April 10.
The Huskies will play their next game in the American Athletic Conference tournament in Clearwater, Florida. They will take on Cincinnati on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
