UConn Baseball took a tough loss to Hartford on Wednesday of last week but bounced back and swept Memphis in their weekend series to start conference play 6-0 for the first time since 1976.
Following the strong weekend performance, UConn players took both of the major weekly awards for the American Athletic Conference.
Freshman left-handed pitcher Mason Feole was named pitcher of the week after throwing eight shutout innings against Memphis to complete the sweep in Game 3. He has started all three of UConn’s shutouts. On Sunday he scattered four hits and struck out five with no walks.
It was his career high in innings and the second-best batting average against of his young career.
Player of the Week went to sophomore catcher Zac Susi. He has a hit in 10 consecutive games and had multi-hit games in all four games last week, for a slash line of .500 AVG/.526 OBP/.778 SLG.
Susi had an extra-base hit in all three games against Memphis and added six RBI on the week, scoring twice. He only struck out once. Susi also contributed in the field, committing one error in 26 chances behind the plate.
As for the team, the Huskies’ 10-2 stretch across their last 12 games has started garnering national attention. Baseball America ranked them No. 25 in the country and they received eight points in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll.
UConn (19-10, 6-0) will play Bryant on Tuesday in North Smithfield, Rhode Island. First pitch is at 3 p.m.
