According to ESPN’s Jeff Goodman, UConn forward Steven Enoch has requested his release from the program.
Enoch just completed his sophomore season at UConn with three starts in 29 games. He averaged 3.4 points and 2.3 rebounds across 12.1 minutes per game.
Enoch saw inconsistent minutes in his freshman season and after playing overseas for Armenia last summer in the FIBA U-20 European Championship, he was expected to take a big step forward both offensively and defensively. However, he still struggled on the defensive side of the ball and his playing time remained inconsistent.
His departure leaves the Huskies without a true center. Amida Brimah and Kentan Facey are both graduating and before the news of his transfer, it seemed Enoch was in line for the starting center spot.
The tallest player remaining on the roster is freshman Juwan Durham, at 6-foot-11, but needs to bulk up considerably. Mamadou Diarra will be returning to the roster coming off of his knee injury and the Huskies do have two forwards joining the team in Josh Carlton and Tyler Polley.
The Huskies also have a junior college transfer coming in with Eric Cobb. He’s 6-foot-10, 280 pounds and posted good numbers at Chipola College this past season.
With those options at the center position, it’s possible Kevin Ollie’s squad will spread it out and play a lot of small-ball in this upcoming season. They may also look to the grad transfer market to plug this glaring hole on the roster.
