UConn Men’s Basketball Scores Season-Opening Win Over Colgate, 70-58

It was a promising effort for Kevin Ollie’s squad in the first game of the season.

Jalen Adams didn’t play but it didn’t matter much, as the UConn Huskies open their season in impressive fashion with a 70-58 win over Colgate at Gampel Pavilion.

Terry Larrier led the Huskies with 27 points on 11-of-18 shooting. He looked unstoppable from within 15 feet, displaying a nice array of moves to the rim and touch from mid-range. Graduate transfer Antwoine Anderson got the start in place of Adams and scored two quick threes on his way to 12 points—good for second on the team.

Two freshmen had solid performances as well, as forwards Tyler Polley and Isaiah Whaley were the next leading scorers with nine and eight points, respectively. Junior college transfer Eric Cobb led the Huskies with eight rebounds, though he scored zero points.

UConn was in control most of the way, save for a few minutes as the first half ended. Despite allowing the Raiders to come back and force a two-point deficit into the break, UConn opened the second half on a 9-2 run and never looked back. It also got somewhat close towards the end, but Larrier scored some timely buckets to make sure the Huskies prevailed.

UConn looked good tonight, especially considering Jalen Adams didn’t play. Terry Larrier appeared to be every bit the dynamic scoring threat we want him to be and the team around him is looking solid as well. We saw good things from a lot of newcomers, and it looks like this year’s team will have some depth, which is nice.

The Huskies will be in action next on Tuesday the 14th at the XL Center when they host Stony Brook at 7 p.m. in a game which will be televised on SNY.
