After two solid road wins for UConn women’s basketball, one dominating against UCF on New Year’s Day and the other against No. 3 Maryland at a sold-out Xfinity Center, forward Gabby Williams earned the American Athletic Conference player of the week award for women’s basketball.

While she did not lead the Huskies in scoring in either game, Williams averaged 15.5 points 7.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game. Williams also added three blocks and three steals against UCF, while grabbing a team-high nine rebounds against Maryland.

In addition to Williams, the men hockey squad took home a pair of Hockey East awards after starting the second half of the season off hot, getting wins against No. 18 St. Cloud State and Brown to win the second Desert Hockey Classic.

Rob Nichols, starting in the stead of Adam Huska, who is in Canada for the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championships, won co-defensive player of the week for his effort against the Huskies and the Bears.

In the opener against St. Cloud State, Nichols made 33 saves on 36 shots and resisted their frantic attempts to tie down two after pulling the goaltender.

He had a much lighter day on New Year’s Eve against Brown, making 15 saves on 16 shots. He allowed one goal early, the goal that opened the scoring at 13:47 of the first period, but held strong for the remainder of the game to allow UConn to come away with some hardware.

Spencer Naas was given a top performer honor after getting three goals and an assist during the tournament, including a goal that put them in the driver’s seat for good 18:40 into the second period against St. Cloud and an assist on the game-winner against Brown.
