UConn Men’s Soccer beat Iona 3-1 on Friday and then followed it up with a 2-0 win over Nebraska-Omaha on Sunday. After a successful first week of the season, Huskies were all over the player of the week awards for the American Athletic Conference.
Adbou Mbacke Thiam earned offensive player of the week. He scored two goals, including the game-winner on Sunday off a penalty kick. He also had an assist on Alex Sanchez’s game-winning goal on Friday.
After two good games in midfield, Niko Petridis was the American Conference’s rookie of the week. He scored an insurance goal in the Huskies’ 2-0 win over Nebraska-Omaha on Sunday and was a spark for the Huskies in both games, contributing to many promising scoring opportunities.
The American Athletic Conference also puts out a five-member honor roll in addition to the players of the week which saw both Scott Levene and Simen Olafsen on the list. Levene made four saves, allowing just one goal across the week. Olafsen played well on the defensive end for the Huskies as UConn only allowed nine shots over two games, five on target.
The Huskies will welcome Louisville (0-0-1) to Morrone Stadium on Friday with kickoff at 7 p.m.
