Baseball

Nick Ahmed [Arizona Diamondbacks]:

  • Previous Week: Ahmed was eligible to be activated from the 15-day disabled list on August 7. He has a right hip impingement.
  • Last Week: On Saturday, it was announced Ahmed will have season-ending hip surgery.
  • Season: In 90 games, Ahmed has a slash line of .218/.265/.299. He has four home runs and 20 RBI, to go along with 26 runs scored.

John Andreoli [Iowa Cubs - AAA (Chicago Cubs)]:

  • Previous Week: Andreoli hit 3-for-21 this week, with a slash line of .143/.217/.143. He was 2-for-3 on stolen base opportunities, scoring two runs on the week.
  • Last Week: Andreoli slashed .321/.528/.609 this week, hitting 9-for-22. He had three sacrifice flies, contributing to his RBI total of four. He had 10 walks, scored seven runs and was 4-for-5 on stolen base opportunities. He only struck out once on the week. On Saturday, he went 3-for-3 with a double, a solo home run and two walks.
  • Season: Andreoli has hit .259/.372/.407 in 125 games. He is 33-for-44 in stolen base attempts. He has 12 home runs, 56 RBI and 87 runs scored. He's added 17 doubles and seven triples.

Matt Barnes [Boston Red Sox]:

  • Previous Week: Barnes made four appearances on the week, pitching 2 2/3 innings. He earned his first career save on Tuesday, getting a strikeout of the only batter he faced. He allowed three runs on three hits in 1/3 of an inning on Thursday and struck out the side in 1 inning on Friday. On Saturday, he walked three and struck out one while allowing a hit in 1 inning.
  • Last week: Barnes pitched 3 innings in two appearance this week. He allowed two earned runs on one hit. He walked three and struck out three more.
  • Season: In 56 2/3 innings pitched, Barnes has made 47 appearances, all in relief. He has a 3.49 ERA, a 1.31 WHIP and 59 strikeouts against 26 walks. He is 1-for-1 in save opportunities.

Carson Cross [State College Spikes - A- Short Season (St. Louis Cardinals)]:

  • Previous Week: In Cross' start this week, he pitched 5 innings, allowing an unearned run on three hits. He struck out one and walked two.
  • Last week: Cross pitched 5 innings in his start this week, allowing six runs, three of which were earned, on seven hits. He struck out six and walked two.
  • Season: Cross has pitched 63 2/3 innings in 10 starts, with a 4-4 record. Batters have hit .267 against him and he has a WHIP of 1.32, as well as an ERA of 3.25. He has 39 strikeouts against 19 walks and has hit three batters.

LJ Mazzilli [Las Vegas 51s - AAA (New York Mets)]:

  • Previous Week: Mazzilli hit 8-for-27 in his first full week at AAA, good for a slash line of .296/.296/.556. He doubled three times and hit a home run. He scored two runs, had two RBI and was 1-for-1 on stolen base attempts. He only struck out two times on the week.
  • Last week: Mazzilli hit 2-for-17 with a slash line of .118/.217/.176. He had two sacrifice flies, giving him two of his four RBI on the week. He scored a run and was 0-for-1 on stolen base attempts.
  • Season: In 110 games between AA and AAA, Mazzilli has hit .242/.323/.354 with 17 doubles, five triples and 43 RBI. He has hit five home runs and has scored 49 runs. He is 7-for-10 stealing bases. He was promoted to AAA Las Vegas on August 5.

Max McDowell [Wisconsin Timber Rattlers - A (Milwaukee Brewers)]:

  • Previous Week: McDowell slashed .188/.235/.188 in a 3-for-16 week. McDowell walked once on the week and did not score any runs.
  • Last Week: McDowell slashed .118/.348/.118 while hitting 2-for-17 this week. McDowell took three walks and was hit by two pitches. He scored a run, knocked in one more and was 2-for-2 on stolen base opportunities.
  • Season: In 89 games, McDowell has hit .274/.359/.352. He has 23 RBI and 20 doubles. He is 17-for-20 on stolen base attempts. He was named a Midwest League All-Star starter.

Bobby Melley [Princeton Rays - Rookie (Tampa Bay Rays)]:

  • Previous Week: Melley hit .261/.292/.435 in a 6-for-23 week this week. He hit a home run and a double, scoring three runs to go along with three RBI.
  • Last Week: Melley hit 6-for-13 this week to go along with a slash line of .462/.611/.538. He worked four walks and was hit by a pitch. He scored three runs, had an RBI and only struck out once on the week.
  • Season: Melley made his debut on June 23 after signing a minor league deal with the Tampa Bay Rays on June 21. In 42 games, he has slashed .325/.415/.490, hitting four home runs and 13 doubles to go along with 25 RBI and 31 runs.

Greg Nappo [New Orleans Zephyrs - AAA (Miami Marlins)]:

  • Previous Week: Nappo made two appearances this week, allowing four runs on four hits in 3 innings on Sunday. He struck out two and walked five. On Saturday, he pitched 3 innings, allowing two runs on six hits. He struck out two and hit one batter.
  • Last Week: Nappo pitched 2 innings in one appearance this week. He allowed one run on two hits, striking out two and walking none.
  • Season: In 23 appearances with one start, Nappo has pitched 58 1/3 innings. He has a WHIP of 1.54 to go along with 47 strikeouts and 30 walks. He has an ERA of 4.63. He is 0-for-2 in save situations.

Scott Oberg [Colorado Rockies]:

  • Previous Week: Oberg pitched 2 1/3 innings over three appearances. He struck out four and walked two, while allowing six runs on six hits. He struck out the two batters he faced on Friday.
  • Last Week: Oberg made four appearances this week, getting 3 1/3 innings of work in. He allowed one earned run on two hits, while striking out three and walking one across all of his appearances.
  • Season: In two stints with Albuquerque and three with Colorado, he has pitched in 51 games, 24 for Colorado and 27 for Albuquerque. In AAA, he is 8-for-9 on save opportunities and has a BAA of .160 as well as a WHIP of 0.90, striking out 36 batters in 29.2 innings. In MLB, he has thrown 26 innings, striking out 20 and walking 11. He has a BAA of .257 and a WHIP of 1.42.

Tyler Olander [Gulf Coast Blue Jays- Rookie (Toronto Blue Jays)]:

  • Previous Week: Olander made a start on Saturday, throwing 2 innings. He did not allow a hit or a run, striking out one and walking one.
  • Last Week: Olander made a start on Thursday, pitching 2 1/3 scoreless innings. He allowed two hits, struck out two and walked one.
  • Season: He was assigned to Bluefield on June 24 and was assigned to GCL Blue Jays on July 26. He has made three appearances with two starts, throwing 6 1/3 innings. He has struck out four, walked five and allowed four hits. He has not allowed any runs.

Mike Olt [San Antonio Missions - AA (San Diego Padres)]:

  • Previous Week: Olt has been on the disabled list since June 15 and is eligible to be activated at any time.
  • Last Week: On Thursday, Olt announced via his Twitter account that he will have season-ending surgery.
  • Season: In 52 games between AAA and AA, Olt hit .253/.369/.398. He has 25 RBI while scoring 25 runs, working 31 walks. He has five home runs on the season. He was placed on the 7-day DL on June 15 retroactive to June 13.


Patrick Ruotolo [Salem-Keizer Volcanoes - A-Short Season (San Francisco Giants)]:

  • Previous Week: Ruotolo made two appearances this week, throwing 3 innings. He struck out three in each appearance and walked one in each appearance as well. He allowed one hit and an unearned run on Sunday.
  • Last Week: Ruotolo allowed his first runs of his professional career, allowing two in 1 2/3 innings this week. He allowed four hits, struck out two and walked one.
  • Season: Ruotolo made his professional debut on June 22 after signing his minor league contract with the San Francisco Giants on June 17. He has pitched 20 innings over 15 appearances between Rookie and A-Short Season, allowing 13 hits and four runs, two of which are unearned runs. He has struck out 36 and has walked 10. He was promoted to A- Short Season on July 7.

Vinny Siena [St. Lucie Mets - A+ (New York Mets)]:

  • Previous Week: Siena played in three games this week, hitting 2-for-9. He had a slash line of .222/.364/.333. He scored three runs, had two RBI and was 1-for-1 on stolen base attempts.
  • Last Week: Siena had himself a 4-for-14 week with a .286/.286/.429 slash line. He scored two runs and had three RBI, doubling twice.
  • Season: Siena has played in 105 games between A and A+, hitting .275/.398/.360. He has 71 runs, four triples and 26 RBI to go along with 23 doubles and 66 walks. He is 10-for-11 on stolen base attempts. He was named a South Atlantic League All-Star starter.

George Springer [Houston Astros]:

  • Previous Week: Springer had a hot week, featuring a six-game hitting streak. He slashed .357/.457/.643 in a 10-for-28 week. He scored seven runs, had eight RBI and walked five times while adding a sacrifice fly. He hit five doubles and a home run.
  • Last Week: Springer hit two home runs and two doubles in a 9-for-23 week. He had a slash line of .391/.533/.739 to go along with eight runs and four RBI. On Friday, he went 4-for-5 with a double and a home run, scoring three runs and driving in two. He followed it up with a 3-for-4 day with another three runs and two RBI. He also had a double and a home run on Saturday.
  • Season: In 123 games, Springer is hitting .266/.366/.481 with 25 home runs and 72 RBI. He has scored 92 runs, hitting 24 doubles to go along with three triples. He finished second in the AL All-Star final vote.

Jack Sundberg [Auburn Doubledays - A- Short Season/Hagerstown Suns - A (Washington Nationals)]:

  • Previous Week: Sundberg hit 1-for-7 with a walk and was 2-for-2 in stolen base attempts with Auburn before getting called up to Hagerstown. He slashed .105/.150/.105 in five games, hitting 2-for-19. He scored a run, had an RBI and was 1-for-1 on stolen base attempts.
  • Last Week: Springer hit 7-for-17 this week with a slash line of .412/.444/.529. He doubled twice, scored two runs and was 2-for-2 on stolen base attempts. He also had an RBI.
  • Season: Sundberg made his professional debut on June 24 after signing a minor league contract with the Washington Nationals on June 20. He has slashed .259/.344/.341 in 36 games between the GCL Nationals, the Auburn Doubledays and the Hagerstown Suns. He is 7-for-9 on stolen base attempts. He was promoted to A- Short Season on July 5 and was promoted to A on August 9.

Women's Basketball

The WNBA is off for a month due to the Olympics. Teams return to action on August 26.

Sue Bird [Seattle Storm]:

  • This Week: Won an Olympic Gold medal with Team USA
  • Season: In 24 games, is averaging 12.5 points, 3.0 rebounds and 6.0 assists.

Swin Cash [New York Liberty]:

  • Season: In 23 games, is averaging 5.2 points and 3.3 rebounds.

Tina Charles [New York Liberty]:

  • This Week: Won an Olympic Gold medal with Team USA
  • Season: In 25 games, is leading the league in scoring with 21.4 points and 9.6 rebounds along with 3.7 assists per game.

Stefanie Dolson [Washington Mystics]:

  • Season: In 24 games, is averaging 8 points and 4.7 rebounds.
