FINAL: UConn loses 4-3 after giving up two goals in the third period. Season is over. Great year for the #IceBus, which will be back with force next year.

Second Period

20:00 - Second period begins with the Huskies trailing 2-1. UConn has 40 minutes to keep its season alive!

17:42 - GOAL UConn - Karl El-Mir ties it up with his second goal of the game on an outstanding individual effort to get past his defender and fire one past the stout Vermont goalie Mike Santaguida. Tied 2-2

13:36 - UConn going 5-on-3 after two quick Vermont penalties. Hopefully the Huskies can make something happen.

12:25 - GOAL UConn - The Huskies were putting some nice chances together and finally got one in. Max Letunov skated to the center and sent a backhand feed to Tage Thompson who blasted one past Santaguida to give the Huskies the lead! 3-2 UConn

5:17 - Patrick Kirtland called for hooking to put Vermont on the power play for the third time in the game.

END 2nd Period: A two-goal period has the Huskies on top going into the second intermission. Karl El-Mir got his second goal of the game by simply making a play and Tage Thompson netted one on a slap shot from a nice Letunov feed to give UConn the lead, 3-2.

First Period

20:00 - The puck has dropped in Hartford as the Huskies look to keep their season alive in Game 2 of the Hockey East Tournament opening round!

17:51 - UConn on the power play after a Brian Bowen holding penalty.

11:18 - GOAL UConn - Joey Ferris made some nice moves behind the net to get around some space from the defense, finds Karl El-Mir who fires it in for the goal! 1-0 UConn

7:48 - GOAL UVM - UConn's lead is short-lived as the Catamounts tie it up with a power-play goal. They had been on a 5-on-3 advantage for over a minute and got it in the net after missing on a few prime chances. Mario Puskarich got the goal, assisted by Brendan Bailey. Tied 1-1

4:47 - GOAL UVM - A Conor O'Neil shot bounces off a UConn defender to give Vermont the lead. 2-1 Vermont

1:52 - Tage Thompson called for an interference penalty after delivering a big hit on Vermont defenseman Chris Muscoby. The play went under review for a while and the crowd rained boos and insults at the referees. Mike Cavanaugh was furious at them as well. The normally reserved head coach was slamming the board and getting pretty heated in the conversations.

END 1st PERIOD: UConn down 2-1 going into the first intermission. The Huskies got on the board first, but Vermont fired back with two goals separated by three minutes to take the lead.

***

The UConn Huskies dropped Game 1 of the Hockey East Tournament opening round to Vermont last night, 2-1, but played a really strong game. Mike Cavanaugh's squad faces elimination tonight in Game 2, with a Game 3 to be held Sunday if UConn can win tonight.

Big for the Huskies to have David Drake back in the lineup. He had been UConn's best defender probably at the time he went down due to injury.
