After a very disappointing start to conference play, UConn needs to pick up the pieces as they travel to Oklahoma to visit the Tulsa Golden Hurricane (6-6) in the home team’s American Athletic Conference opener.
Juniors Jaleel Wheeler (12.4 ppg, 5.4 rpg) and Junior Etou (12.0 ppg, 6.7 rpg) lead the Tulsa scoring attack, which also gets solid production from its bench, led by senior guard Pat Birt.
This will be the seventh meeting ever between these two teams, with UConn holding a 4-2 advantage. Each time, the home team has prevailed.
For UConn, a team already decimated by injury took another hit to a key player as point guard Jalen Adams left the Auburn game late and missed the Huskies’ conference opener against Houston. Without Adams in the lineup, opponents have been able to focus their defensive effort on the big men, who had been performing well.
Luckily, Adams is cleared to play today. The Huskies seemed to be getting back on track starting with the Syracuse game, so hopefully that can resume with Adams back in the lineup. At the very least, they should be able to score more than the meager 12 they put up in the first half at home against Houston.
KenPom has this game as a fairly close matchup, projecting a one point Tulsa win. Right now the Huskies are ranked 102nd in the efficiency rankings while Tulsa is ranked 139.
At this point in the season, we’re just hoping to see growth from this team under such challenging circumstances. This is the open thread, feel free to share your pre-game thoughts and predictions here and stick around to discuss the game!
