UConn and Cincinnati are about to kick off in what will be the sixth game of the season for each team. Through five games, UConn’s performance has left much to be desired, on both sides of the ball. But today’s opponent has its own issues that need to be ironed out.
Hayden Moore will be starting at quarterback for the Bearcats. Head coach Tommy Tuberville has been playing musical chairs under center, with three different guys seeing time. The Cincinnati offense is usually a prolific one, but with uncertainty at quarterback and losing its top six receivers from last year, there have been some stumbling blocks for this team.
UConn’s perennial strength, its defense, has also proven to be less effective than it has in the past, currently rated 81st in the country by Football Study Hall’s S&P+ efficiency. The secondary’s weak link, two younger guys rotating at the safety spot opposite Obi Melifonwu, has been exposed multiple times as the Huskies have given up an alarming amount of big plays.
Offensively, we’re dealing with a familiar and painful story. The offensive line continues to struggle, and the coaching staff continues to fail to gameplan around it. If the Husky defense buttons up and gets back to where it was before, there’s still no knowing if the offense can keep the defense off the field and put enough points up to win. Hopefully today we see a new beginning with the offensive strategy, which has been stale and ineffective.
