UConn Women’s Basketball Enters Season As Coaches No. 1 Team

Even with loss of the Big Three, the coaches think highly of UConn.

With the loss of Breanna Stewart, Moriah Jefferson and Morgan Tuck, one would think that there is no way that the four-time defending champions UConn Huskies women’s basketball team would be the preseason No. 1 team. Well, think again.

Despite the loss of all that talent, the Division I coaches who vote in the USA Today/Coaches Poll picked UConn to be the No. 1 team in the preseason poll. The Huskies received 18 of 32 first-place votes.

The Huskies are joined in the top five by four of their future opponents, Notre Dame, South Carolina, Baylor and Maryland.

The No. 4 Baylor Lady Bears will get the first crack at the Huskies on Nov. 17 at Gampel Pavilion while No. 2 Notre Dame will take on the Huskies on December 7 in South Bend, IN. UConn and No. 5 Maryland will play over winter break on December 29 in College Park, MD while No. 2 South Carolina will come to Gampel Pavilion on February 13, 2017.

UConn opens up it season with No. 12 Florida State and will also take on co-No. 6s Ohio State and Texas as well as No. 21 DePaul.

There are no teams from the American Athletic Conference ranked in the Coaches’ Top 25. South Florida is the first team in the others receiving votes. Temple and Tulane join the Bulls in that category as well.
