STORRS - Bob Diaco opened UConn Football's media availability on Wednesday with a statement concerning where things stand with the team. Preseason camp will be ending tomorrow, with preparation for Villanova beginning in earnest after that.

In team news, four captains were named after a vote by the players last night. Safety Andrew Adams, tackle Andreas Knappe, defensive tackle Julian Campenni and linebacker Marquise Vann will be captaining the 2015 Huskies. All except for Knappe are seniors. Both Knappe and Adams attended AAC Media Day with head coach Bob Diaco.

Diaco continues to hold off on naming a starting quarterback, saying he will wait until Sunday, but it is expected that Bryant Shirreffs will be the opening night starter one week from tomorrow. Bob did add that junior college transfer Garrett Anderson is making a push, however.

Then the discussion turned to the receivers, where Diaco stated that redshirt sophomore Thomas Lucas, who converted from defensive back last year, is looking like the leader to accompany Noel Thomas as the starter. Dhameer Bradley, who was listed as the post-spring starter, has apparently endured some struggles this preseason. Diaco also said that freshmen Hergy Mayala, Tyraiq Beals, Aaron McLean and even Frank Battle could see time this year. If you have been following this blog closely over the summer, that shouldn't be news to you.

Though Diaco doesn't see any freshman on the two-deep roster, he does see the potential for a few more from the Class of 2015 to see the field. He also mentioned that tight ends Chris Lee and Zordon Holman should see time. Offensive tackle Matthew Peart may also see time as well. Diaco said he does not anticipate any defensive players seeing time this season.

A long list of players and all the assistant coaches were available as well. We will have notes, quotes and stories out across the rest of the week!
