Alterique Gilbert felt the love from UConn right away after announcing his college choice July 4.
The four-star guard chose the Huskies over Texas, Louisville, Syracuse and Illinois. He told Court Cred he heard from several former UConn stars after making the decision, including Ryan Boatright, Donny Marshall and current head coach Kevin Ollie.
Gilbert told Court Cred what he has told everyone else about choosing UConn. Ollie was a big factor. Gilbert thinks the former UConn point guard and NBA journeyman, turned championship-winning coach, can have an important impact on his career.
"His experience in the NBA and him being in the league so long, it showed me he knows how to get through adversity and that's the place I'm trying to go to," Gilbert said.
Gilbert follows in the footsteps of a long line of great UConn guards, a line made longer every year. He said he has the tools to join that line.
"I'm definitely bringing heart, energy, leadership," Gilbert said. "Just looking to win, to come in and make the difference. And I'm looking to have fun."
