The first AP poll of the season is out, and UConn is tabbed to be one of the nation's top teams.
After last year's disappointing season, the Huskies check in at No. 20 in the initial preseason poll. UConn is the lone representative from the American Athletic Conference, as SMU was 27th in voting. Cincinnati also received votes out of the American. The Huskies are the only New England rep, which is never a surprise, but Providence, Rhode Island and Yale all received votes.
No. 20 is a reasonable spot for the Huskies. Last year was a tough one for UConn, and many people are concerned about what the team will look like without Ryan Boatright. The Huskies begin the regular season Nov. 13. They opened exhibition play with an 88-72 win over Tampa Sunday.
UConn's resident voter, Dave Borges, the Huskies' beat writer for the New Haven Register, had the Huskies up at No. 13.
Other notable voters:
- Dana O'Neil (ESPN): 23
- Dick Vitale (ESPN): 15
- Jon Rothstein (CBS): 18
- Seth Davis (CBS-Sports Illustrated): 15
