Parade All-American Arkeel Newsome Officially a UConn Husky

The gem of this recruiting class, the in-state star from Ansonia has officially signed

Arkeel Newsome first committed to Coach Paul Pasqualoni last July. The Ansonia product had received interest from Boston College and UMass and despite a late push from a few unnamed schools signed his Letter of Intent today.

With the coaching turnover, there was some concern that Newsome might open up his recruitment given the continued dominance he demonstrated across his senior season and the interest it might draw. Luckily, once hired Bob Diaco made it a priority to keep the good players already committed to The University of Connecticut, and Newsome was excited to maintain his commitment with the new head coach.

Newsome's High School stats are tremendous. He set state career records for yards, touchdowns and points and in 2013 broke the state's single season rushing record. He averaged a stunning 11 yards per carry across his career. A few weeks ago, he was named to the Parade Small-School All-American Team.

UConn has had a bit of a reputation in producing high quality running backs. Donald Brown and Jordan Todman are making plays in the NFL and Newsome should be able to join those two in the annals of great Husky backs. He could challenge a crowded backfield for playing time this year and could be the best runner we have ever had. He's certainly the most decorated, and the first Parade All-American in UConn history. Be very excited Husky fans, this guy is for real.
