UConn vs. Vermont, First Intermission: UConn ahead 1-0

Johnny Austin scores to take the lead after one.

UConn started off the first period as best they could, garnering a power play just 1:14 into the game.  While it started promisingly enough with a quick chance against Vermont's Goalie Mike Santaguida, but he was able to control the puck and the Huskies didn't get set again until after the kill.

The two sides traded possession, with Vermont maintaining possession. But UConn poked the puck free in the Vermont defensive zone and Johnny Austin was able to get a shot on net.  It looked like it was deflected slightly by Norris before net, but it went in and Austin was given credit for the goal at 9:00. Vermont tried to bounce back with high energy and it cost the Huskies a three-minute penalty after a tussle by the Vermont goal.  Gerling got called for the five-minute facemask major and the Huskies were on the PK until 13:13 had passed int he first. Luckily, and skillfully, they beat the advantage.

With a majority of the period gone by, UConn tried to capitalize on chances that arose, getting off a couple shots, but they were gobbled up by Santaguida.  The period ended uneventfully in the neutral zone at 1-0.

Vermont outshot UConn 10 to 8.
