Soccer Beats No. 25 USF 1-0, Wins AAC Regular Season Title

Huskies clinch the top seed in the AAC Tournament with a hard-fought win on the road.

After a disappointing start to the season which saw the team lose a number of tough games to non-conferences opponents, the Huskies have turned it around, seemingly invigorated by conference play. The young team, anchored by a couple of senior leaders in Sergio Campbell and Adria Beso Marco, has gelled down the stretch and are playing their best soccer of the year, winning the last five games and more importantly going undefeated in their last seven conference games (6-0-1).

Their game last night, a 1-0 win over No. 25 USF, gave UConn the AAC regular season title and the programs 13th conference regular season title.

UConn was able to breakthrough for the only goal of the game in the 29th minute when Kwame Awuah led a counter attack, setting up Ethan Vanacore-Decker who was able to put home his 5th goal of the season and give the Huskies the lead.

That proved to be UConn's only shot of the half, as the Huskies were outshot by the Bulls 12-3 in the game. The Husky defense stayed strong throughout the game and did not allow a shot on goal in the second half. Redshirt freshman Scott Levene continued his outstanding play in goal, matching a career-high four saves and improving his record to 7-1-1.

UConn had already clinched home-field advantage throughout the conference tournament (with the semi-finals and finals already being slated for Marrone Stadium), but now hold the top seed.

The Huskies begin their quest for a conference title and automatic bid to the NCAA tournament when the play Temple at home on November 8th.
