FINAL: UConn 4, Quinnipiac 1
The third period started with shots from both sides, but nothing connecting until a 3rd minute penalty on UConn by Johnny Austin. QU came out in full attack but Nichols again impressed with a number of swift grabs to force face off, a category UConn impressively won.
Things got noticeably scrappy between the two sides in the final period, Quinnipiacs frustration was showing through despite having a majority of possession and shots. UConn seemed most effective on the break, not getting many chances in offensive sets but definitely putting chances on net when they arose. This could be because of the Bobcats defense but it seemed more due to UConn's back line staying back and never pinching forward.
The scrappiness continued when Gerling was called for an unsportsmanlike penalty in the 8th minute, putting UConn on the PK once again. Quinnipiac piled on Nichols more than once trying to get a rebound, or anything, in front of the net. UConn underhandedly killed it off once again.
The Bobcats kept the gas on all period, pulling out all the stops. Nichols got a little ice spray in the 15th minute but held strong. UConn had their first quality offensive possession time in the last few minutes, with a couple of very strong chances that were batted away by Garteig.
They home team pulled their goalie with two minutes to go, and it worked out wonderfully for the Huskies as a deflected pass was pushed into the zone and redirected into the net by Schwartz for the games final goal.
This was UConn's second win ever against a ranked opponent and their first win again Quinnipiac since the Bobcats joined the ECAC.
