UConn 3, Quinnipiac 1
A much faster, more physical period followed the timid first.
Quinnipiac changed goalies (Lawrence for Garteig) at the start of the second and scored a scrappy goal just 43 seconds into the period. It was reviewed, and Mike Cavanaugh was visibly displeased with its allowance. Quinnipiac's Sam Anas scored his first full-strength goal of the season.
UConn goalie Rob Nichols had a couple very strong saves: one a great sprawling save after a blown clearance in the second minute and another stopping a 3-on-2 quickly thereafter.
Quinnipiac should have gone on the power play at 3:18 on an iffy hooking call, but were also for called for an embellishment penalty, giving way to a 4-on-4 which the Bobcats substantially controlled, but where both teams ultimately came up empty.
UConn played noticeably more conservative and QU took advantage with an onslaught midway through the period. Nichols made a slew of nimble saves to keep the Huskies up.
The refs missed a too many men on the ice penalty that would have been against UConn around the 11th minute. Kirtland scored on a great dump and chase possession by the Huskies in the 12th to put the Huskies up two. The Bobcats put Garteig back in after the allowance.
At 12:49 UConn went on the power play on an interference call on Golonka, which was efficiently killed. They soon went on another as Norris laid out a Bobcat player a little too late in the 16th minute and got called for interference. QU came out firing but again Nichols stood on his head and the PK stood firm.
There were two quality shots to close out the second period, the first of which by Gerling had SportsCenter Top 10 written all over it with fancy stick work but was barely saved by QU, and the rebound pinged off the crossbar.
