UConn football isn't playing this weekend, so for at least a week we will have a break from the heartbreak of early turnovers, mistakes and general despair that has been terrorizing our gameday experience. But look on the bright side, through four games UConn has played on a Thursday, Friday and twice on Saturdays. That is so good for the #brand and #exposure!
Even though the Huskies aren't playing, that doesn't mean there aren't ways for self-interested UConn fans to follow the action. Here are the games that I will be keeping an eye on this weekend.
UCF (1-2) at Houston (2-2), tonight at 7pm on ESPN
Both of these teams had rocky starts to the season despite having high hopes at the beginning. UCF has suffered due to quarterback issues, and other early struggles, but need to get back on track this week. They can't afford to be 1-3 with No. 18 BYU visiting next week.
Louisville (4-1) at Syracuse (1-3), Friday at 7pm on ESPN
After a one-year break as conference buddies, Louisville and Syracuse will rekindle the old Big East rivalry when the Cardinals visit the Carrier Dome tomorrow night. This storied rivalry will (probably) be the centerpiece of the "Fall of Big East Football" documentary.
Nobody is certain how good or bad these two teams really are, but the Orange are certainly hurting after two straight losses in convincing fashion at the hands of Maryland and Notre Dame. Louisville is 4-1, but hasn't played anyone significant since losing to Virginia two games ago. They did, however, beat Miami (FL) on the road to start the season.
SMU (0-4) at East Carolina (3-1), Saturday at 12pm on ESPN
If you like points, or have some sort of masochistic interest in watching blowouts, or just want a preview of what is to come when UConn visits East Carolina, you'll want to check this one out. Whatever the line is right now, take the Pirates. If they don't cover, we need to immediately launch a point-shaving investigation.
Ball State (1-3) at Army (1-3), Saturday at 12pm on CBSSN
We play Army later this year at Yankee Stadium, and could even beat them. The Black Knights lost to Yale last week, so it would be really, really, really, really, embarrassing if UConn can't beat them.
Memphis (2-2) at Cincinnati (2-1), Saturday at 7pm on CBSSN
This should actually be a really good game. Check out my breakdown here.
