Well it wasn't easy, but in the NCAA tournament it's survive and advance. And that's what the Huskies did Thursday night, using a Mamadou Diouf goal in the 81st minute to defeat Quinnipiac 2-1 and move into the Round of 32.
The late goal was Diouf's first of the season, after injuries sidelined the senior for a large chunk of the season. Diouf had a great chance to get on the board earlier in the game and make the score 2-0, but his penalty kick was denied by the Quinnipiac keeper. Sophomore Nicholas Zuniga scored the first goal of the game for the Huskies at the 50:30 mark.
UConn controlled the action for a majority of the game, outshooting the Bobcats 13-5. The Huskies record now stands at 12-2-6.
Next up: the #16 seeded UMBC Terriers. UConn will head to Baltimore for a matchup of two top 25 teams, with the match scheduled for Sunday at 5 pm.
