TheRoundUp 1/10: Huskies rally late to power by WVU

Andre Drummond, who had 20 points and 11 rebounds, scored on back-to-back trips down the floor. The crowd, restless in the first half, went wild.

For months now, Calhoun and Drummond's teammates and media far and wide have been saying and writing what a massive talent Drummond is. On this January night, Drummond showed that he believed it too.

But some inspired talk by Calhoun at some point after that 'T' certainly did seem to light a fire under the Huskies, who suddenly started to rebound and defend with urgency. Drummond and Jeremy Lamb stepped up big-time, an effective zone press certainly helped as well, and UConn rallied to victory.

As impressive as Lamb and Drummond were, that's how terrible sophomore point guard Shabazz Napier played. Napier was 0 for 6 from the field, but did manage eight assists in the victory. Calhoun played his small-forward trio of DeAndre Daniels, Roscoe Smith and Niels Giffey a grand total of 16 minutes, opting to go with the quick and diminutive three-guard lineup of Napier, Ryan Boatright and Lamb with two of the three bigs -- Drummond, Oriakhi and Tyler Olander.

While UConn’s recent struggles might mean looking ahead is folly, the Huskies are primed for a run right about now. They have four consecutive winnable games coming up: at Notre Dame on Saturday, vs. Cincinnati on Jan. 18, at Tennessee on Jan. 21 and vs. Notre Dame on Jan. 29.

Score this night for Boatright. He had seven points, four assists and his team won. Hinds had eight points, one assist. Down the stretch, as UConn rallied to win, West Virginia's inexperienced players, such as Hinds, looked rattled.
