The future is now, and it's alphabetized

After a banner season in 2010-11, the UConn football team is in a state of flux.

Gone from last year's Fiesta Bowl-losing team are jitterbug extraordinaire Jordan Todman, every starting linebacker, its burly long-time fullback and, of course, its latest noodle-armed quarterback.

Some of these positions have obvious successors: USC transfer D.J. Shoemate will get his shot at being the future back, now that Robbie Frey is boning up on the crossing of the Delaware instead of the Huskies playbook; and a few talented, albeit mostly unproven players have already emerged in the races at linebacker and fullback.

But new coach Paul Pasqualoni (still feels weird) heads into his first summer practices with no answer at quarterback.

Although his trick-shot pedigree is at this point unknown, redshirt sophomore Mike Box appears to be the favorite, if only because he's the only signal-caller left who played last season and, according to some fans, has the skills of a young Roger Staubach, based solely on nothing.

And on the team's final spring depth chart, Box is in fact listed as the starter. But only because Pasqualoni knows a thing or two about his ABCs.

According to the Courant's Dez Connor, Pasqualoni views the quarterback race too close to call as of now, and as a result, has listed the QBs in alphabetical order on the official post-spring depth chart.

So, at this point, Pasqualoni would lead you to believe that any of the five quarterbacks has a shot at opening the season at the helm. Well, everyone except for redshirt freshman Blaise Driscoll. He's fucked.

QB
4 Mike Box RSo. 6-3 209 OR
11 Scott McCummings RFr. 6-2 227 OR
18 Johnny McEntee RJr. 6-3 221 OR
2 Mike Nebrich Fr. 6-1 189 OR
17 Blaise Driscoll RFr. 6-1 193

Then again, the spring depth chart usually means very little in the long run, and is used mostly as a kick-in-the-pants to some want-to-needing veterans.

But, if anything, it also serves as a reminder that in the Huskies' stable of running backs there is a player named Jordan Huxtable, who will immediately become my favorite player if he isn't red-sweatered this sason. And, as of now, it seems like Jonathan Jean-Louis will not be making his 80th position change. So yay for that!
