TheRoundUp 10/14: Oh sweet lord, basketball is back

UConn's First Night festivities are being broadcast on ESPN3 at 7. We'll have an open thread. Be here.

Expectations are high for Drummond, Huskies - NCAA Division I Mens Basketball -
The 6-11, 18-year-old Drummond obviously has size, but also leaping ability (a 41-inch vertical), terrific feet, great hands, is an adroit passer and can blow by guys five inches shorter than him from 15 feet out. The argument can be made there has never been a player like him in UConn's history. Drummond hasn't played a game in Connecticut threads and he’s already one of college basketball’s most feared players. "He has some Emeka in him," Calhoun said. "Athletically, they remind me of each other."

What you need to know about the UConn Huskies - NCAA Division I Mens Basketball -
Most underrated player: Oriakhi. That’s overall, not by us. When our top 100 list of college basketball players comes out next week, Oriakhi will be ranked 30th. It’s time for the affable UConn big man to get the credit he deserves. He was pivotal at the 5 last season, when the Huskies needed legitimacy down low. Oriakhi snared offensive rebounds on 14.5 percent of UConn’s possessions, which was one of the better rates in the nation.

DeAndre Daniels: UConn Expects Big Things From DeAndre Daniels - Hartford Courant
Daniels, who will join teammate Niels Giffey in the First Night three-point shooting contest, could push for a starting spot. But it will be tough to crack, since the Huskies will return much of their championship team. The competition for playing time figures to be intense.

UConn was the last team in the country with a perfect record, but the Huskies dropped points for the first time in a scoreless draw against Notre Dame. Maryland saw its unbeaten record broken by Virginia in their rivalry match-up, a win that helped boost the Cavaliers back into the rankings, and allowed North Carolina to edge ahead of the Terrapins into the No. 2 spot in the FOX Soccer NCAA Top 25.

A Compendium Of Brutal USF Losses Against Connecticut - SB Nation Tampa Bay
When you line [USF] up against the Connecticut Huskies, some sort of malevolent force comes over the game and causes USF to lose in the most horrible way you can imagine. Even though the Bulls have been the more talented team in possibly all six of their Big East meetings, USF is only 2-4 in those games. Those four losses have been some of the toughest Bulls fans have ever had to stomach. So if you have the fortitude to come back in time with me, let's see what made those games so rough. We'll go in reverse order, which is convenient because the pain and suffering increases the further back you go

UConn Has Hands Full With USF QB | NBC Connecticut
"You've got to make sure you're in the right place against the run," Pasqualoni said during a teleconference Thursday. "You don't want to give him any big plays. In the last game they went down the field against Pittsburgh, he scored the first touchdown. They spread you out and do so many things that you've got to cover so many areas. … There's an awful lot there to contend with."
