Big East Basketball Power Rankings Week 11

Welcome back to the 2010-2011 Big East Power Rankings. The rules are simple, we've invited the SB Nation (or friend of SB Nation) blog for each team to cast a vote. They rank the teams from one to 16 and then we bring you the results. Enjoy.

Tough week for Syracuse huh? Of course, by tough week I mean they had to play two top-10 teams and lost two well-played games. To most schools, back-to-back matchups against Top-10 teams means that you're playing in late March and probably in the Final Four, but for schools in the Big East it means you're playing the middle of your schedule on cold January nights.

So yeah, Syracuse lost twice, but they didn't really get punished for it, nor did they deserve to. They did slip to fourth in the rankings, but that is where they deserve to be right now, because the top of the Big East is a four-headed monster and Syracuse is a big part of that. Pittsburgh was once again the undisputed leader, while Villanova and UConn duked it out for second place.

Once you get out of the top four though, things get really interesting. Everyone ranked between fifth and eleventh (Notre Dame, Louisville, St. John's, West Virginia, Cincinnati, Georgetown and Marquette) has spent the last two weeks either trading wins with each other or beating up on really bad teams they were expected to beat. Sure there is some sort of grading in here -- Notre Dame and Louisville are almost certainly better than Cincinnati -- but it is at least conceivable that any of those seven teams could finish either fifth or eleventh in the league. There are going to be a lot of 8-10, 9-9 and 10-8 records from this bunch.

Finally, as always, we come to the bottom of the conference. For a while it was looking like DePaul might climb out of the basement this year just by virtue of Providence being so horrible, but then the Friars went and upset Louisville, so, sorry DePaul, you're still the doormat. Of course, the Blue Demons do travel to South Florida on Thursday, and well, someone's got to win that. Why not DePaul?

There almost wasn't a homer of the week this week. Almost every single blogger went the modest route and even Casual Hoya's choice to slot Georgetown sixth is entirely defensible, plus, it helps that they included this very fair premptive defense:

Response to your inevitable "Homer of the Week": It's a long season and every team, including Pitt, has looked horrible at some point during this season. Georgetown looks to have gotten over their dry spell.

However, at the very bottom of the very last ballot I found this:

14. South Florida
15. Providence

That, of course, is Voodoo Five's ballot, and it is objectively wrong. Sorry V5, thanks for playing, Homer of the Week. I didn't have to look nearly as hard to find our Hater of the Week, Rumble in the Garden, who put Louisville above UConn and dropped Notre Dame to No. 9. Lots of hate going on there.
