In about half an hour, the UConn women will tip-off against Ohio St. They'll play 40 minutes of basketball, and in all likelihood, win, which is exactly what they've done in each their past 87 games.
A lot of those wins have been special -- there were two national titles in there after all -- but this game will likely get more attention than any of its predecessors. That, of course, is because this is game 88, and in the 1970's UCLA Bruins won 88 straight games. So this is history, this is the high-watermark.
Ask just about anyone and you'll get a different opinion about how we should mark this streak. Whether or not the streaks should be compared is something I'll leave to pundits to debate. All I'll say is this: 88 is a special number in college basketball and no matter how the UConn's streak stacks up against UCLA in your mind, it is a mammoth achievement, one, that I personally didn't think was possibly after seeing a previous UConn win steak snapped at 70.
The game is on ESPNU or ESPN3. It tips at 2:30. This is your open thread. Join in. Go Huskies.
