Depth chart released

randy-pokemon

I choose you, Tod-man!

Forgive me as I take a brief intermission from Football Preview Weekish.

UConn released its first two-deep depth chart of the season Sunday as the team prepares for its opener against the mighty Bobcats of Ohio, and with not much really up in the air, there weren't too many surprises.

The first thing that will probably jump out at you is that despite previous reports, Dwayne Difton was not listed as one of the starters at wide receiver. Perhaps Randy Edsall wasn't as excited about my Obamicon as I was.

Instead, oft-injured Brad Kanuch is the starter on one side, with Michael Smith and Kashif Smith stuck between the dreaded "OR" on the other.

But while it may seem a bit shocking at first, given all the gushing over Difton lately, remember that the team will be using a whole lot of receivers in its new no-huddle, spreadish offense. So even if he's not listed as a starter, there's no way he won't see his share of playing. He's too good.

Also of note, Jesse Joseph has officially locked up the DE spot opposite Lindsey Witten, Ryan Griffin gets the nod at TE, and Jerome Junior has beat out Jonathan Jean-Louis for the starting job at strong safety. Jean-Louis, who has now fallen flat in his quest for the starting SS spot two seasons in a row, will be moved to Husky linebacker.

And, with a little nod to us Connecticutians, Marcus Aiken, a RB at St. Paul-Bristol and recruited as a WR, is now the backup at FS behind Robert Vaughn. Which shows just how thin that position has become.

See the full depth chart after the jump.
