Flash Mob At Cuse Game

Not sure if any of you guys saw this, but the UConn dance coach taught all of the students a choreographed dance routine while we were waiting for tip off. We went over it for like an hour from 7:00-8:00 and were told we would do it after the first media timeout. I heard it was ESPN's idea, which is weird because they didn't even show it on TV, but it was pretty cool nonetheless. Hopefully UConn comes out with an HD video of it because this fan video is from across the way so it doesn't really do it justice. I thought the whole thing was pretty stupid while we were practicing, but when we actually did it, it was pretty fun. The other fans really liked it and a few of the players even turned to look. Anyway, here's the video...enjoy.

Whoops: 2010 ACC Freshman Player of the Year leaving Maryland

Another one bites the dust...

Maryland QB Danny O'Brien transferring

Coach Randy Edsall remarked that he was “disappointed by Danny’s decision.” “Danny told me that he’s not committed to our program, that he’s not ‘all in.’ I want what’s best for all of our players. Danny wants a fresh start elsewhere. I wish him well."

EDIT: oops, I missed derbyguy posting about this like 5 days ago, but isn't it worth a double-lol? http://www.theuconnblog.com/2012/2/8/2785407/danny-obrien-leaving-maryland

Coach P Recruiting

Last year, shortly after Edsall left us for his dream job and subsequent dreamy 2-10 season (EdsaLOL) I wrote a fanpost summarizing Edsall's recruiting while at UConn. It included some nifty charts (in my humble opinion). Now that we have experienced Coach P's first recruiting class I decided to update those charts so that we might compare the two head coaches Connecticut has ever known as a I-A school.

After the jump you can see how important it was that we hire someone with strong ties to those talent filled Connecticut high schools. I've also collected the numbers for Edsall's first class at Maryland compared to the last few years of Maryland recruiting.

Kemba Walker gets his First NBA Triple-Double

Kemba completed his first triple double of his young NBA career on the 28th for the Charlotte Bobcats. He scored 20 points, dished 11 assists, and pulled down 10 rebounds.

He's going to get some more starts too, as starting point guard DJ Augustin is out for at least four games with an injury to his toe, so Kemba's going to be the starter.

I'm now going to write words so that I can post this article. Words words words.

The WWE Raw House Show @ The XL Center Open Thread

I've been threatening to do this for a long time. Finally, that time has come. It's the WWE live rasslin thread! WWE's Raw crew rolls into the XL tonight. I won tickets through XL's twitter page by saying who my favorite "superstar" was by quoting when HHH insulted him in print. So I'm playing with house money here. They don't do logical things like telling you what the matches are going to be before you show up anymore, but the main event may be CM Punk vs. The Miz in a steel cage, which is a useless stip now that they've banned the blade. John Cena will be there as well, they've been having battle royals to start the cards, and the "divas" match, otherwise known as the go take a piss so you don't contemplate suicide match.

God willing, I'll post thoughts on every match. I'll be using "insider" wrestling lingo, so if you aren't familiar, google is your friend and try to keep up. I'll also post on the unique social microcosm that is live wrestling shows. There's a reason people in the business call the fans "marks".

Anyway, off to Will Call!

The UConn/JMU Men's Soccer Thread

You can watch it online Here.  The play by play is a guy calling around getting a seasonal job.  He is dropping "fuck" all over the place.  Hope he gets the job.  In any event the game is on.

1-0 UConn first half.  Beautiful build-up to the goal.  Just well taken.  Things should flow pretty smoothly one would think.  Hopefully our back four plays well on the ball for once.

Three more words makes a post.

We All Know What DeFilippo Thinks: But How About the Rest of the ACC?

Hey there Husky fans! So I've been spending some time over at BCI lately, inspired by some of their more vocal and less polite members' habit of trolling on the UConn Blog. One of their constant refrains is "No one wants UConn in the ACC!". Now we're all aware that's the position of DeFilippo and the majority of fans at BCI. But ever since the Globe article came out which said that UConn would have been the number two school to receive an offer, but for the lobbying/ranting of DeFilippo, I've been curious what the opinions of the other eleven ACC members (plus Pitt and 'Cuse) really are on the subject of UConn joining the ACC. There's very little out there in terms of the school presidents and ADs. So I figured I'd head over to the blogs, search for "UConn", and see what I could find. Not everyone was for it, some are against it- but the majority of ACC fans, at least in the posts that I found, seem to either support UConn joining the conference, or to feel neutral/ambivalent about expanding further now.

Here's a sampling of some of the better posts I read:

Fun With Targets and Catches, or, Why Short Passes Are A Good Idea

Today, Bill C. of the wonderful Football Study Hall shared, via Google Docs, targets-and-catches data for the first 5 games of the 2011 season. The data details the number of times a receiver was targeted with a pass, how often that receiver caught the pass, and the percent of the team's total targets which were directed at that receiver. For example, here's UConn's targets-and-catches data, which is current as of the Western Michigan game.

  • Isiah Moore - 28 Targets, 18 Catches (64.3% Catch Rate), 14.7 YPC (9.4 Yards Per Target), 20.9% Target Rate
  • Kashif Moore - 26 Targets, 16 Catches (61.5% Catch Rate), 13.8 YPC (8.5 Yards Per Target), 19.4% Target Rate
  • Ryan Griffin - 23 Targets, 12 Catches (52.2% Catch Rate), 19.0 YPC (9.9 Yards Per Target), 17.2% Target Rate
  • Lyle McCombs - 17 Targets, 8 Catches (47.1% Catch Rate), 13.3 YPC (6.2 Yards Per Target), 12.7% Target Rate
  • Geremy Davis - 12 Targets, 4 Catches (33.3% Catch Rate), 10.5 YPC (3.5 Yards Per Target), 9.0% Target Rate
  • Tebucky Jones - 8 Targets, 3 Catches (37.5% Catch Rate), 11.3 YPC (4.3 Yards Per Target), 6.0% Target Rate
  • Nick Williams - 7 Targets, 3 Catches (42.9% Catch Rate), 46.3 YPC (19.9 Yards Per Target), 5.2% Target Rate

I didn't include any receivers with less than 5 targets, since there's little that can be determined from such a small sample size.

So, what does this data say about Johnny McEntee, George DeLeone, and UConn's passing game as a whole? There's a lot of promise, but inside the statistics lie the head-scratching horrors that we've grown accustomed to seeing from UConn's offense in 2011.
