Amateur film session: UConn's first offensive play vs. Michigan
First of all, I want to emphasize the very first word of my headline. I am absolutely an amateur when it comes to football X's and O's. I've watched and read about enough football that I sort of know what I'm talking about, but I freely welcome smarter football fans calling me an idiot in the comments.
Second of all, I want to thank MGoBlog for the invaluable service of posting videos of every snap of last Saturday's game on YouTube (I presume he does this for every Michigan game.) I love watching film, seeing plays develop and seeing what works, but I get so few chances to do so like this. The video embedded above was really a treat. I would love it if some UConn fan with video editing technology and free time could do this every week.
Now then, onto the actual substance:
You are Joe Moorehead. You've had eight months to figure out a gameplan, a way to carry over the offensive success of 2009 into Michigan Stadium and beat down the Wolverines' reputedly soft defense. You want to come out swinging, show the Wolverines you mean business. Obviously, your first play will set the tone for the game and, perhaps hopefully, the season.
What do you come up with?
Well, we have our answer. Let's analyze this shizz. Watch the play above...you can't miss it, it's the very first play, then head below the jump.
Lutrus Watch: The re-beginning has begun
Day 5 at ground zero, and the word is vague as all hell.
But at least this time, unlike the p ast two, it appears the status of Scott Lutrus, the admiral of ass-kicking, is a bit more definitive.
After ducking behind the impenetrable force field that is the Big East's new, moderately-useful injury report, Randy Edsall finally turned over his cards, and the results are not good. Lutrus, more powerful and dangerous than a locomotive with a background in hand-to-ass-whooping combat and injected with HGH (Human GETTHEHELLOUTTAMYWAY hormones), is officially "out" for Saturday's showdown with Texas Southern with an "upper extremity" injury.
While that could mean that Lutrus is merely replacing one of his cybernetic arms, or perhaps suffering from a case of the snifflies, it probably has something to do with another shoulder stinger, which is what plagued the linebacker most of last season.

Journal Inquirer - Waiting his turn
Harris Agbor has played in only five games the last three years, twice in 2008 and only three times last season as he missed most of the season with a LCL tear in his left knee suffered early in camp. He came into the season with five special teams tackles in three years.
UConn QB Zach Frazer Talks Offense - UConn Huskies Football Blog | Hartford Courant | Desmond Conner
"We would love to just go back, like you said, chuck it around a bit and get our play-action game going and get our running backs out in space. You kind of look back and you want that to happen because we're definitely capable of that."
Texas Southern's Arvell Nelson: "It's An Opportunity For Us" - UConn Huskies Football Blog | Hartford Courant | Desmond Conner
"It's not just another game on the schedule," said quarterback Arvell Nelson, who leads the Tigers into Rentschler Field on Saturday. "It's an opportunity for us."
Plenty more after the jump.
Will UConn redeem itself for last year?
That's the question The Dagger asks as part of an early Big East basketball preview. The answer: I really hope so.
Looks like UConn basketball will be getting a new court design at The Morgue. Pretty snazzy, if I do say so myself. Especially like the red men's arc to differentiate from women's. (Not usually a fan of red as de facto third color, but in cases like this, it's a nice touch.)
Larger view here.

Jeff Jacobs column: UConn QB Frazer In A Touchy Spot - Courant.com
Yes, there were drops. Yes, especially in the early going, Frazer was under duress. But there also was bad touch on a number of passes. Some were too high. Some were too low. Some were behind receivers. And some were just too dang hard.
UConn Football's Kendall Reyes Says Huskies Weren't Focused Against Michigan - Courant.com
"We didn't have the best week of practice that we could have had last week," Reyes said. "People just thought we were going to come out and win this game. You can't do that in college anymore. That's how we beat people in other years; because we worked harder and prepared harder"
Tuesday with Randy – Week 2 - UConn's new injury policy
"To protect the student-athlete, we are going to use five different body parts to describe it," Edsall said. "Not going to get specific with the injury due to the privacy of the student-athlete." The five parts: leg, arm, upper extremities, torso and head. That’s a UConn decision, not a Big East mandate.
The Day - It's only UConn's first game; so let's relax
There's just no need to be Gloomy Gus at this point. Nothing's really happened, except they lost a road game to a desperate program before 113,000 people.
Randy Edsall To UConn Fans: Get Inside Rentschler And Stay Inside - UConn Huskies Football Blog | Hartford Courant | Desmond Conner
"If you want to support your teams, that's what you do, you get into the stadium early and you stay until the end, win, lose or draw," he said.
Lots of good stuff today. Hit the jump.
UConn has a long, proud tradition of making terrible, terrible commercials, and this year's spot, which recalls (and self-plagiarizes) the "Always Part of U" campaign from the last two years, is no different. Luckily, the relatively fine gentleman who runs HoyaSuxa has undertaken an annotation project that at least makes the ad amusing. As he put it, "Connecticut has eschewed the principle of "learning from your mistakes" and has boldly chartered a course for 'Schadenfreudetown.'" He is not wrong.
Rivals releases top 15 for class of 2013
Rivals released their Top 15 basketball prospects for the class of 2013, because hey, it is never too early to talk about basketball recruits, right? Well, not really. For example, if you wanted a time when it would be wrong to talk about the class of 2013 a perfect example would be September 2010, when the players are just a few weeks into their sophomore year of high school. But I digress.
I mention this to point out that the fifth-ranked player in the class, Kuran Iverson, is from Hartford and goes to Northwest Catholic, and the sixth-ranked player, Nerlens Noel, currently attends the Tilton School in New Hampshire, which is the same school current Huskies Alex Oriakhi and Jamal Coombs-McDaniel attended. Not for nothing, but Noel's rivals page currently lists UConn as one of six schools he is interested in.
Again, all this is mind-bogglingly early, and who knows where UConn basketball will be in 2013 (besides looking to go for a three-peat after national titles in 2011 and 2012), but it is still something to note.
