Despite receiving heavy interest from Ivy League schools like Harvard and Columbia, McAllister chose to go the FBS route. Despite receiving a lot of initial interest, he only received offers from Army and UConn. When he reopened his recruitment after the firing of Paul Pasqualoni, Boston College attempted to recruit him to play safety, but Bob Diaco was able to get him to reaffirm his commitment to the Huskies.

ESPN Insider says "He has the size, strength, and speed to play the running back position at the BCS Level of play." They believe that he will only get better with added bulk, as his frame and balance already make him very difficult to bring down. McAllister is also a good receiver out of the backfield, excelling in running screens and flat routes.

If not redshirted, the Connecticut native, who averaged nearly 14 yards a carry as a senior, has the chance to play a bit-role in the offense immediately, specifically on special teams, where made an impact in high school as both a returner and a coverage guy
