UConn has a quarterback: Whitmer given the top spot on depth chart, Cochran fourth

When UConn football begins preseason practice tomorrow they will be doing so with a clear starting quarterback for the first time in two years. Coach Paul Pasqualoni has announced that juco transfer Chandler Whitmer has earned the depth chart's top spot. At the end of spring practice Pasqualoni refused to name a lead quarterback, instead insisting it was a five-way race between Whitmer, Johnny McEntee, Michael Nebrich, Scott McCummings and freshman Casey Cochran.

Whitmer, who originally enrolled at Illinois before transferring to Butler Community College, was thought to be the most impressive quarterback coming out of UConn's spring. He threw for two touchdowns and 187 on 18-of-27 passing in the Spring Game.

It should also be noted that Cochran, the highly-touted freshman, is listed at fourth on the depth chart. Cochran has a broken thumb on his left hand which should keep him out for the next month and with Whitmer now in the lead role it would not be stunning to see him redshirt.
