Becca Bruszewski yelled 'sucks to be you' into the UConn locker room after eliminating the Huskies in last year's Final Four.

UConn-Notre Dame Rivalry Heats Up - Courant.com
After Notre Dame beat the Huskies last April in the Final Four, according to the source, Irish senior forward Becca Bruszewski opened the door to the UConn locker room in Indianapolis and yelled six departing words. "It must suck to be you." Our John Altavilla and Mike DiMauro of the New London Day reported it. Doris Burke said it on ESPN during No. 4 UConn's 72-59 loss to No. 3 Notre Dame Monday night at the XL Center. UConn players publicly have denied knowing anything about it. And it will be interesting to watch the narrative unravel in the coming weeks. But this much is sure. When stuff like that leaks out, the stage is set for some good ol' hate.

But this veteran, poised and deep Notre Dame team was up to the challenge. Their guards, led by All-American Skylar Diggins and cohorts Natalie Novosel, Brittany Mallory and Kayla McBride, were too good, too often, leading the Irish to a 72-59 win over the Huskies. For the first time in its history, No. 3 Notre Dame is the Big East regular-season champion after completing a season-sweep of the Huskies.

"I've told the kids, if they can play for 20 minutes with the No. 1 or 2 team in the country, there's no question we can play with anybody," Blaney said Monday after practice. "We just have to play that way for the entire 40 minutes. They have a way of letting it go and not playing together for periods of time."

Calhoun had successful surgery on his lower back at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City Monday morning and was expected to be able to return home on Tuesday. His coaching status moving forward will be evaluated on a day-to-day basis. Brian Blaney told a Providence radio station on Monday that it "won’t be fun" having to go up against his father tonight, and George echoed those sentiments following UConn’s practice.

The New Haven Register Blogs: UConn Men's Basketball Blog: LaFleur: 'I Never Felt Eclipsed or Pushed Out' at UConn
"It should be the goal of every assistant coach to do your job somewhere and one day, have the opportunity to run your own program," LaFleur said. "This seemed like an opportunity to do that someday." Popular opinion was that LaFleur felt eclipsed by Ollie, the first-year assistant coach who drew raves for his recruiting and inspirational leadership with last year's team. LaFleur insists that's not the case.
