Looking at my calendar, I see we're now past January 20th, so if this team is going to go on one of Jim Calhoun's patented "everything starts to click and UConn rips off 12 straight wins to end the season" runs they are more than welcome to do so at any time.
Unfortunately for the Huskies, if they're going to go on that run it's going to be without Ryan Boatright, who wasn't allowed to travel with the team today because the NCAA is dumb. Enosch Wolf is back in Connecticut too (waiting on the grade from one of his finals), not that he was expected to contribute a lot.
Niels Giffey will be starting based on the strength of his last outing, which was the first time in two months that someone on UConn's roster realized you're allowed to score from the small forward position.
What will UConn be doing today? Well, trying to get Jeremy Lamb back on track would be a nice start. The absence of Boatright really hurts him, and it's shown in his inconsistent play. Speaking of inconsistent, Alex Oriakhi and Andre Drummond both had off nights against Yancy Gates and Cincinnati, so hopefully they can right the ship this afternoon.

Interesting description of UT
Cuonzo brought a hard core, “chins on chests” defensive philosophy with him. The players seem to be buying into it after a maddeningly inconsistent first half of the season.
Jarnell Stokes, our high school senior, has been an incredible spark on the offensive side of the ball.
Andre Drummond is fun to watch. I really liked watching Lamb’s game in the tourney last year.

Also, one of the reasons why I dislike Tennessee (mostly the women’s team, since we don’t really have any other access to them) is that their fans are this weirdly over-positive group. Like parents who are way too proud of their kids. Maybe it’s a Southern think, but I much prefer my northeastern cynicism and sarcasm.

Haven't seen a lot of games lately, so grain of salt, etc.
But offense still looks directionless. Like some of the sets they use, but they go nowhere. Likely because they’re trying to play through the post. But everything Drummond gets at this point is because he’s Stanley Robinson athletic.
Oriakhi is too short of his skill set, Lamb picks his spots — a good thing most of the time, but can’t really be an uber-complementary player in college — Napier struggles to orchestrate.

But I feel like the zone/increased attention on Kemba created a very clear solution to the team’s crippling problem — the young kids just needed to pick up the slack a bit more and take advantage of all the open looks, etc.. Whereas here, I think this is a pretty fundamental issue. Not sure they’ll solve it.

But, unless I’m missing something, I don’t see defensive numbers. You can’t just say, Lamb scores more points = we win. Does the other team score more when the three-guard lineup is in? Or less? That could easily cancel out any positives of it.

Cool. There’s obviously a lot of value in the offensive numbers. Just curious about the defensive end, since it does create a pretty big size disadvantage. The Kemba/Bazz backcourt was able to overcome it, though.

I’m totally in the “move Bazz off the ball” camp; I’ve been beating that drum since November. Just not sure if Boatright, a player with stats eerily similar to Bazz, is the cure-all answer. You make a good point about putting another good offensive player on the floor, but I’m worried about the defensive end.

Boatright’s a cure-all on his own, I just think having the option of using two ballhandlers at the same time is a big upgrade for this team.
Especially when
Napier and Lamb have played 235 of 240 possible minutes since Boatright was sat down (and that number, since it’s rounded, probably overestimates their rest).

Both players have played consistently heavy minutes regardless of Boatright being available or not. So it’s not like they’re getting more rest when he’s around. I guess it lightens their burden a bit? But, I mean, they’re still playing competitive basketball.
And, yeah, I totally buy the offensive benefits; your numbers definitely show a difference. Just wondering if it’s as helpful overall when you factor in the defensive numbers.

Arkansas beat Michigan today too
So, even though we’ve lost to at least three teams that won’t sniff the NCAA Tournament, we have twoish non-godawful wins.
Also, I think FSU was without a key player in our game.
