Alex Oriakhi criticizes Jim Calhoun on twitter... AGAIN

Picture_4_medium

Alex Oriakhi is having a bad week. Earlier today the junior center ended a disappointing showing in the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament by playing just 10 minutes in UConn's game against Florida St. in which he recorded no points, no rebounds and three fouls. Oriakhi was coming off his best game of the season -- in a losing effort against Central Florida -- but two days earlier he was benched prior to UConn's game with UNC-Asheville and lashed out at head coach Jim Calhoun on twitter, calling the benching "bs."

After today's game Oriakhi took to twitter again, responding to a comment about Calhoun and seemingly saying that the coach is a "mumu" -- a Nigerian slang term for idiot. You can see other, less reliable references here and here (see definition 3).

This is a little different than Oriakhi calling Calhoun's decision to bench him "bs," if only because online translations of nigerian slang don't exactly provide a lot of contex, but it is worth nothing that both of Oriakhi's parents are Nigerian.

It's fine for Oriakhi to be frustrated, I would be frustrated too if I was in his position right now. What's not fine is for one of the team's co-captains to be repeatedly criticizing the head coach in a public forum. At best it shows poor judgment and at worst it is a sign of larger troubles brewing within the team.

STUPID TWITTER THINGS UPDATE: Some UConn fans have felt the need to personally criticize Oriakhi on twitter. This is extremely dumb. If people think he's struggling that's fine, but going to him directly is stupid. But that's not news on it's own. What is sort of news-y is that Oriakhi is responding with answers like " pls shut up," "u sound stupid foreal" and "u sound stupid too." Look, it's fine Oriakhi has a twitter, and yeah, he can say what he wants, but he's got over 10,000 followers (including us, obviously), and what he says reflects on the university and his team. He has a very public platform and he needs to be careful about how he uses it.

UPDATE TWOOriakhi has tweeted: "Where I'm frm n Nigeria mum means boss." As someone noted in the comments there are over 250 languages in Nigeria, so this could well be true. Just two brief notes from me: 1) With some quick googling I have not been able to find another source backing that definition. 2) Oriakhi's original tweet said Calhoun was "a" mumu, not "the" mumu, had he said the word "the" as in "Calhoun is the boss," it would make a world of difference right now.

UPDATE THREE: Oriakhi has deleted the original tweet from his twitter account

Seriously

Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer has a great observation about twitter. He says that these organizations need to set some education in place on social media, how it works, how it lasts forever, etc. He also says there should be some kind of test before you’re able to tweet, based on time of day, mood, level of sobriety, etc.

I think someone needs a little time on the naughty seat. It’s at the end of the bench past the walk-ons and the team manager.

just red through

Every comment on this thread, and this is probably the best point. Athletes get in trouble plenty talking to the traditional media after games. Having complete, constant, unfiltered access to anyone with an opinion and Internet access probably isn’t the best idea.

This applies to everyone with regards to Twitter

There was a whole section during my work’s harassment training discussing posting stuff on Facebook, Twitter, etc and how it can really bite you in the ass.

First of all, a word about the standards on the site

You’re allowed to attack me all you want, so feel free to tell me to fuck off. You are not, however, allowed to attack other users, so don’t attack other users such as lady nutmeg.

Secondly, as I acknowledged in the post, I don’t have a great handle on Nigerian slang (I studied Latin, what a waste), so if you have an alternate definition of mumu feel free to provide it. My concern isn’t what it means, it’s the context in which it appeared, especially after the “bs” tweet of two days ago.

Finally, I’m not trying to tear down Alex, I’m a big fan of his and I appreciate everything he’s done for UConn, I’m just relaying the comments he’s made in a public forum, which seem to be, at best, unwise.

Interesting

There are some things you can do, here, if you’re actually Oriakhi’s brother

1. You can enlighten us to the real meaning of “mumu” instead of yelling about the “incorrect” meaning in the article
2. You can tell your brother that he’s openly insulting people and possibly trash-talking his coach on a public forum and he’s making the entire program look bad
3. You could get us some autographed merch (doesn’t hurt to ask)
4. You can tell Alex to perform the way he’s supposed to be performing, there’s a reason why Coach Calhoun is playing him off the bench and it’s not because the dude’s ugly or anything

by Joe O'Leary on Nov 26, 2011 10:25 PM EST reply actions

I think Amy Oriakhi would be his sister

But if you are indeed his brother I would be curious about how you got that name.

by Anonymous Coward on Nov 26, 2011 10:27 PM EST up reply actions

yup

completely spaced there, you are correct. anywho other points still stand

by Joe O'Leary on Nov 26, 2011 10:32 PM EST up reply actions

if u dont get an opportunity to play how do u perform the way the coach wants you to im just wondering? i mean when uconn won the national title awww man oriakhi is the man now hes not getting a chance to play now hes a piece of trash thats not fair and u all know its not. i mean honestly its not as easy as it looks im sure if half u were on the court none of u would score.

by amy oriakhi on Nov 26, 2011 10:31 PM EST reply actions

He definitely got an opportunity to play today

10 minutes, 0 points. He didn’t score either, so I’m definitely sure it’s not as easy as it looks (except when Drummond got a double-double in the same game)

by Joe O'Leary on Nov 26, 2011 10:33 PM EST up reply actions

And the thing is

You’re acting like we’re against the guy. Every UConn fan likes Oriakhi, he’s a great player, but in a situation like this you need to keep your head, practice harder, and play consistently and well. You don’t lash out on Twitter, you work hard and post numbers like he did against UCF.

by Joe O'Leary on Nov 26, 2011 10:36 PM EST up reply actions

Again

this isn’t about his play. At all. In fact, two days ago we published an article that said this:

UConn doesn’t win a championship last April without Oriakhi there to clean up all those misses, and while Napier seems to be the new voice of the locker room, it sure seems like Oriakhi isn’t that far behind on the leadership hierarchy. You would think that he has earned a leash longer than four games, all of which UConn would have won regardless of if Das Germans were starting.

I haven’t talked about his play in this article and don’t plan to because this isn’t about that. It’s about public statements Oriakhi has made.

by Andrew Porter on Nov 26, 2011 10:36 PM EST up reply actions

Bottom line is last year has no bearing on this year at all. In fact it seems like this team is still riding the wave of last year and has gotten a dose of reality this weekend. Last year was phenomenal but that was last year. Alex needs to look forward and needs to work harder and be more consistent and aggressive when playing. Having started for 2 years doesn’t entitle him to that now or the future. He’s got some growing up to do.

by huskee on Nov 26, 2011 10:43 PM EST up reply actions

Alex is bringing this heat down on himself. For the team’s upperclassman he’s not showing a lot of maturity out on twitter. If he wants to run his mouth on Calhoun he shouldn’t be doing it in a public forum. I want nothing more than to see him do well and play his way back into the lineup but he is not entitled to that position. He has yet to earn it this year. He has more competition. But he’s only screwing himself by blaming the coach and calling him a fool.

by huskee on Nov 26, 2011 10:40 PM EST up reply actions

of course he got a double double he played more duhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

by amy oriakhi on Nov 26, 2011 10:36 PM EST reply actions

I don't even like Uconn

But I do like Oriakhi, and it’s silly to argue about his play at this point. You’ve criticed the blog and the commentors for making assumptions when you haven’t provided any contradicting evidence about what he said. If you contest the meaning of his tweet please show some evidence. If you’re just going to harass a bunch of people that legitimately like him as a person and a player then I don’t know what to tell you other than you aren’t helping at all.

by Anonymous Coward on Nov 26, 2011 10:40 PM EST up reply actions

mumu doesnt have a meaning

mumu is something that is tossed around when joking around with friends theres no technical definition so i dont know what u really want me to tell u

by amy oriakhi on Nov 26, 2011 10:43 PM EST reply actions

She hasn’t clarified anything. The other kid says “he doesn’t understand the coach”…alex follows up with “he’s a mumu”…he insinuated that calhoun’s a fool for not keeping him in starting lineup…Even more obnoxious then him calling out calhoun is his hubris in thinking he is entitled to that starting position. He hasn’t earned it by a longshot this year. he’s got a lot of work to do.

by huskee on Nov 26, 2011 10:48 PM EST up reply actions

Please. Google MUMU and Nigeria and you get tons of hits on it meaning “fool” or “idiot”…back track all you want but Alex called Calhoun a mumu which was alluding to him not being “smart/savvy” enough to keep Alex in starting lineup…Regardless of your spin the kid fucked up. he shoudnt have posted it. If he wants to call Calhoun an ass or an idiot to his friends behind closed doors then fine but twitter isn’t the spot for it.

by huskee on Nov 26, 2011 10:45 PM EST up reply actions

i would love to see half of u that sit on ur ass on the comp get on the court and play and see how far u go im pretty sure none of u could make a JV team in HS if u tried.

Questions

1) Why did he have to say Mumu instead of Boss or Chief?

2) Why can’t you provide ANY sources or references to back this up other than ’I’m from Nigeria’?

3) Calling everyone else here dumb is NOT HELPING. It’s exactly what your brother did to Calhoun and what started this entire thing, and here you are continuing to do the exact same thing.

As somebody who has played pickup with Porter a few times, I would have to disagree; I think he could at least make JV, albeit at a terrible high school (don’t they have rules where they can’t cut anyone?)

But seriously I don’t think this is about Alex’s play or tearing him down in any way. All UConn fans saw him perform last year, and know what he is capable of. We all want to see that level of play from him again this year. But, it would also help to be responsible when things aren’t going his way, rather than stir up controversy.

If he gets back at it in practice and shows some leadership, rather than taking to Twitter, I’m sure his minutes will be right back where they need to be.

by amp343 on Nov 26, 2011 11:06 PM EST reply actions

The spin is in full effect. Mumu now means Boss…classic. So in Alex’s little corner of Nigeria it means Boss/Chief…everywhere else it means idiot/fool…

STOP IT CHILDREN

Good lord, I cannot believe the drama that is being created.

  1. why is every little tweet Oriakhi sends out being dissected and analyzed…I would be embarrassed if I paid that much attention to the tweets being sent Oriakhi to even notice the response to Coombs McDaniel or the mumu. I fail to see why they need such sensationalistic headlines.
  1. While I can understand why Amy Oriakhi is defensive of her brother, her behavior here is not helping him.

If basketball really is a team game Amy like you say (and it is), than why is your brother fighting on twitter and distracting from the GUTSY performance and debut of Ryan Boatright in a high pressure situation in a good TEAM win?

  1. Oriakhi needs to grow up. I actually sent him a very supportive tweet saying we real fans support him and he will get through his struggles. He of course ignored mine and responded to every single negative one he received. So he appears to be looking for a fight. He is loved by many UConn fans but his behavior if it continues is very immature. It doesnt help that blogs like this are trying to find his screw ups and plastering them in eye grabbing headlines but Alex needs to know he is a player for a high profile program and twitter is seen by EVERYONE. He is a captain of this team. He needs to end this behavior know or it could be a huge distraction for this team and worse he could jeopardize his position on the team. I hope I am wrong but his “friend” Coombs McDaniel was the one pushing the buttons to start this and I hope he isn’t trying to poision Alex on UConn.

So in closing, STOPITCHILDREN! Everyone grow up!

by StopItChildren on Nov 26, 2011 11:25 PM EST reply actions

Meh…I’m more aligned with the Program and Coach then a single player. As much as i’d like to see Alex play his way back into the starting lineup, I think he’s abusing twitter. So he should get hung out to dry on this one. He should have shut it down for a while yesterday but he decided to keep it going after today’s game. He’s going to learn a lesson on this one…I’d like to see Calhoun shut down twitter for the whole team for a while.

Stop digging the ditch.

http://twitter.com/#!/adewale8/status/140643705081171968 — one of his own friends agrees it means “idiot”

The number of languages, which actually fall under three primary linguistic umbrellas, is largely irrelevant in this case because “mumu” is part of the Naija pidgin, which is found (albeit not always commonplace) throughout all of Nigeria. (Oh, and hey, fancy this: http://naijalingo.com/)

Really, I do not want to have to publicly school a player’s sister on her own BS. I’m trying quite hard to avoid doing that because I get where she’s coming from, and she’s probably a kick-ass sister. But if Oriakhi seriously argues to the press that “mumu” doesn’t mean what it means, especially in the context that he used it, it’s going to take about two seconds for anyone with basic knowledge of Nigerian pidgin to tear that apart. Hell, there are Nigerian faculty, as well as linguists and anthropologists, /right at UConn/ who can immediately blow holes in that argument.

So honestly, take the free advice from people who genuinely care about your brother and drop the “it means something nice” argument now before you compound the issue by adding both mouthing off /and/ lying to his list of offenses.

Side note: That great Melissa McCarthy SNL rerun is on. Way more interesting than this.

Put up

Or shut up. Seriously Alex just has to grow up and play the game. Shut your fucking mouth and play like you belong on the team! We’re all uconn huskies and will support the team to the end but no one player is above the team.

by Tate George on Nov 27, 2011 12:06 AM EST via mobile reply actions

Some of this is residual from last year’s championship. Calhoun aluded to it today after the game. They need to let go of last year and focus on this year. Alex needs to focus on the here and now as the past doesn’t influence his future on the team. He’ll be fine down the line but he definitely needs to shut his twitter feed down as he can’t handle it.

did i say anyone was above anyone else on the team fool? get ur damn facts straight.

guess not

Sorry, just going by your definition. I’ll try to use it correctly in the future.

Sadly enough,

the story out of this will be “E-Brawl Over Student-Athlete Tweet As Fans, Sister Overreact” instead of “Holy Shit, We Really Need Twitter Guidelines Before Something Worse Goes Down.”

That dolt did the first smart thing of the night and protected her twitter feed. Now she can run her foul mouth to her followers. They can enjoy that privilege.

She’s just protecting her brother, even if she’s a little…lashy-outy…assuming she’s real. We’re all rooting for the same thing here. Let’s not get all angry at each other.

That being said, I"m joining this late and holy crap.

to be fair

We only got mad after she attacked our athletic ability. I know for a fact that at least one of could probably probably score in a game. Especially if we got put in against the huskies in the second half of a game in the battle 4 Atlantis tournament.

I guess as a complete loser

I am sympathetic to her arguments.

But there is some good quality sarcastic internet chatter in this thread.

no I understand

No one likes to see family targeted. But once you start dropping expletives and attacking commenters (including fans that are being reasonable) on the boards of a blog, that sympathy wanes.

I’d agree that twitter related stories can be weak, but if a player made a comment like that in any other public forum they’d be criticized.

If you don’t want tweets to be pulled apart by blogs, fans or the media DM, make private, or create an alias I’m sure most, if not all, NCAA and pro teams have been briefed on this. Especially to keep bulletin board material out of the locker room.

by Fergy on Nov 27, 2011 12:51 AM EST via iPhone app up reply actions

Her and her brother have been dishonest as hell. Alex has some serious growing up to do. He’s not proving to be much of a leader taking pot shots at coaches and their decisions this year. He’s played subpar…He’s owed nothing. He hasn’t proven himself and his response to that is to put it on the coaches. He probably wont even learn a lesson from this.

The PMSing by all sides here is amazing.

Anyone trashing Oriakhi, Christ, get a fucking life. It’s fucking twitter. Yeah what he did was stupid, but there’s no need to make a federal case here about it.

Amy – if you are really Alex’s sister, you and he would do well to remember you have absolutely zero to gain from engaging with the random morons that populate much of the internet.

by UCHuskies08 on Nov 27, 2011 2:15 AM EST reply actions

See no one here is trashing Alex. They are saying the exact same thing you just said. What he tweeted was stupid. With the addition that since this is a repeat occurence of twitter mismanagement, he should probably hold off from using it for a bit.

All the “PMSing” was a result of the unnecessary personal attacks conducted by “amy”. And the biggest “moron” in this entire thread was her. No one here told her to fuck off or called her other names, but she did plenty of that along with ridiculously illogical arguments and blatantly wrong statements about both the author of this post and other commenters.

I can't believe it took 139 comments

for this picture to be posted.

Anyway, the comments have clearly spiraled out of control, so I’m locking the thread.
